"Dutch Interior" by Joan Miró

Joan Miró's "Dutch Interior" is a vibrant, whimsical reimagining of a 17th-century Dutch genre painting, infused with his distinctive abstract and surreal visual language.

About The Artwork

Painted in 1928, "Dutch Interior" is part of a series where Miró transforms the work of old masters into his surrealistic vision. Inspired by a postcard of a painting by Hendrick Martenszoon Sorgh, Miró reinterprets the scene, infusing it with fantastical elements that defy conventional perspectives, reflecting his inner world and the subconscious. The artwork symbolizes the bridging of historical art and contemporary abstraction, showcasing Miró's innovative spirit and his pursuit of a new artistic language.

About the Artist

Joan Miró (1893 – 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting

A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city of Barcelona in 1975, and another, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, was established in his adoptive city of Palma de Mallorca in 1981.
